Funky Nail Art Without the Fuss!

This is a guide on how to create the perfect funky nail art using masking tape/scotch tape.
After hearing some of my friends say that they wanted to try this, I experimented with different methods until I found the perfect way to easily create nail art with masking tape.
I’m posting this so that hopefully you guys can get it right the first time 😉
Step 1: You will need:
– Nail file, buffer, hand cream/cuticle oil (optional)
– Protective base coat
– One metallic effect nail varnish
– Other non-metallic nail varnish
– Protective shiny topcoat
– Masking tape/Scotch tape

Step 2: Preparing your nails:
Prepare your nails as you normally would. That could mean filing, buffing, moisturising or whatever else you might want to do. This nail art can work on nails o any shape/size, but in my opinion you get the best effect on medium-long rounded nails.

Step 3: Base coat: (drop the bass!)
Apply a protective base coat to your nails to prevent them from damage such as staining. I used Sally Hansen Double Duty which can be used as a base coat or a top coat. Allow your base coat to fully dry before moving on to the next step.

Step 4: Metallic paint – oooohhh, shiiiiiinyy
Paint all of your nails using the metallic nail paint. I used Barry M Instant Nail Effects in Foil Effect Gold. You can use any metallic colour that you wish, but it works best with gold or silver. Depending on the pigmentation of the nail paint you’re using, you may want to paint on another layer once the first one dries. Ensure that your nails are completely dry before moving on to the next step.

Step 5: Masking tape attack!
Using scissors, cut masking tape or scotch tape into whatever shape or pattern you want your nail design to be in. (I used thin triangles.) Put your pecies of tape onto your nails, pressing firmly down to git rid of any trapped air bubbles. Make sure to leave a slight overhang over the edge of your nail so that you have something to grip when you pull off the tape.

Step 6: Now comes the bit with the colours…
Working one nail at a time, apply your chosen colour(s) over your masking taped nails. I used Rimmel London Lycra Pro in 440 Orange Bliss, and 17 Fast Finish in Catwalk Coture. Apply a layer of paint that’s thin enough so that it isn’t all gloopy, but thick enough so that it won’t need another coat. Wait five seconds, then gently (and carefully!) peel off the masking tape. By peeling off the tape while the paint is still wet, it gives you smoother, cleaner edges and a neater finish.

Step 7: Gloss it up!
Use a protective top coat for a shiny, glossy finish that helps your funky nail design to last as long as possible. I used Sally Hansen Double Duty which can be used as a top coat or a base coat.

Step 8: Show it off 😉
Show off your funky nails!
Remember, you can mix it up by using different colours of nail varnish and different shapes or designs of masking tape. Have fun, and be creative with it!
