While you can’t beat a classic pair of black leather Chelsea boots, ankle boots now have more personality than ever.
You’re just as likely to see a pair of silver mirrored stiletto boots on your commute as a classic tan pull-on. The street style set has been having fun with colour and print, and bright red boots are the most buzzed-about style of 2017 so far.
This year has also seen the return of a number of trends that we forgot about, including cowboy boots and chunky Dr. Martens. So if you want to update your footwear collection for summer and beyond then scroll below to see the nine most exciting boot trends that you will see everywhere over the rest of the year.
Style Notes: Red ankle boots exploded in December 2016, and while we suspected that this might be a festive trend that would die quickly after the holidays, the red boot trend is still gaining momentum. Red boots are going to be huge next autumn, as they featured in dozens of A/W 17 collections, including Victoria Beckham, Valentino and Fendi. So this is a boot trend that is for the entire of 2017, not only for Christmas.
Style Notes: Gigi Hadid has been inseparable from her Dr. Martens this year, confirming that they are back in a big way.
Style Notes: Yellow might make you think of workman boots or practical wellies, but we kept spotting yellow boots in A/W 17 collections, such as at Valentino, Balenciaga, Topshop Unique, Marques’Almeida and more. Balenciaga has been leading the footwear pack already this year, so prepare to see yellow boots all over the high street come September.
Style Notes: If you are looking for boots with personality, then you can’t top the extreme floral ankle boots trend. This might ever-so-slightly remind us of Kim Kardashian West’s infamous floral Met Gala dress and matching gloves, but we’re going with it.
Style Notes: The white shoe has finally ditched its unfortunate rep, and is back in a big way, thanks to the ’80s fashion revival. We love white ankle boots with extra embellishment or detailing, whether that is with a silver buckle, kitten heel or statement coloured heel.
Style Notes: At London Fashion Week in February, we kept spotting silver mirrored boots, in particular, a pair of Topshop boots that Lucy Williams, Jessie Bush, Ella Eyre and more wore. This trend was started by Balenciaga and its space-age mirrored boots, and of course Zara also tapped into the trend with numerous super-shiny silver boots.
Style Notes: At London Fashion Week in February one unlikely trend kept cropping up again and again—cowboy boots. In 2004, we all wanted a pair of distressed, embroidered cowboy boots, thanks to Sienna Miller, and come September we’ll all be wearing them once again. But this time they are a sleeker iteration, such as Gigi Hadid’s city western-inspired boots she wore earlier this year.
Style Notes: If you’ve read our shoe trends guide, you’ll know that the kitten heel is back, and this not only applies to mules and slingbacks but to ankle boots as well.
Style Notes: Over fashion month we noticed that editors ditched delicate pumps or heels for teenage clompy ankle boots. The good news is these are practical, as well as offering plenty of attitude and a presence on next season’s runways.
